ORLANDO (April 3, 2018)- Orlando is home to fun, celebration and parties that more than half of college students call spring break. However, Rosen Hotels & Resorts is making sure the city – and students – benefits from more than just tourism dollars during thistime of year. The Harris Rosen Foundation is sponsoring an alternative spring break for nine Cornell students to engage in meaningful civic volunteerism and positively impact lives outside of their own communities. This year marks the eleventh anniversary of the program.
“At The Harris Rosen Foundation, we are always looking for ways to inspire change, to improve our world – and we are not alone,” said Harris Rosen, founder of the Rosen Hotels & Resorts. “These students are the future leaders of our world and we want to open those channels of greatness and funnel it down to the next generation.”
This year’s group will be the first to engage with the new Rosen Preschool that was founded as part of the Parramore area revitalization efforts. The preschool is part of Orange County Public School’s Academic Center for Excellence which opened in August 2017 and includes 24 classrooms of educational curriculum, breakfast, lunch and snacks for two-, three-, and four-year-olds. The Harris Rosen Foundation provides funding for all teachers’ and aides’ salaries. Rosen estimates that The Harris Rosen Foundation will provide millions per year to support the new Rosen Preschool program.
The purpose of alternative spring breaks is to provide the opportunity for students to spend their time off in a way that allows them to make a positive difference through local- or globally-based volunteer projects and potentially gain a larger cultural awareness in a drug- and alcohol-free environment. The program set forth for the Cornell students by The Harris Rosen Foundation engages the students in community efforts benefiting elementary and high school aged children in the Parramore and Tangelo Park areas of Orlando. The itinerary also earmarks team building and leadership activities as well as mentoring and reflection time for the volunteers themselves. The students will spend the bulk of their mornings encouraging and inspiring Orlando’s youth at the Tangelo Park Elementary School. In the afternoons, they will participate in the Tangelo Park Program Community Advisory Board Meeting, engage in mentoring sessions with Dr. Phillips Tangelo Park students and volunteer at the Science Through Literacy Fair.
The Harris Rosen Foundation is sponsoring eight females and one male, led by student trip leaders Cindy Dou and Kevin Wang, to travel to Orlando and stay at Rosen Shingle Creek for the duration of their April 2-6 spring break. All the students hail from Cornell University with a wide variety of majors, including Chemical Engineering, Human Development, Biology and Hotel Administration.
